Objectives:

The Thoroughbred Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. is a USDA program that serves a non-profit Council.  We have 33 approved project measures that meet one or more of the following objectives: 

  • WATER QUALITY
  • AGRICULTURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
  • AGRICULTURAL WASTE DISPOSAL
  • RECREATION AND TOURISM
  • FARMLAND PRESERVATION
Our Council belives these objectives are of major importance for the economic, environmental, and social development of the area we serve.
Approved Project Measures: 

Equine Waste Demonstration Project---Overall goal of this project is to reduce the disposal of stable muck in sinkholes and adjacent to streams. Demonstration sites will showcase on-farm composting and roll baling. This project is funded through the EPA 319(h) NPS Program at $205,417.00.

Land Acquisition/Easements for Elkhorn Creek---Purpose is to expand the acquisition of riparian lands and /or easements reducing non-point source pollution. This project is funded through the EPA 319 (h) NPS Program at $420,000.00

Bluegrass-Aspendale Teen Center---Working with children in inner city Lexington on a gardening and community market project. The youth are also cooperating with the local farmers market. 

Bluegrass Chapter SWCS Endowment Fund---Assisting the Bluegrass Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society in building their endowment for scholarships and conservation education.  Fund has approximately $10,000 at the end of 1999. 

Support Midway Public Market---Cooperate with the City of Midway, Commodity Growers Cooperative, and Woodford County Extension Service in the development of public/farmers market located on I-64. 

Support Bluegrass Conservation Alliance---Member of this alliance that serves as a forum for networking among  conservation and historical organizations in the Inner Bluegrass. 

Urban Watershed Riparian Reforestation Project---Cooperated with Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and other organizations on establishing riparian areas on public lands along Cane Run Creek.  Received grant from National Tree Trust for 8,550 trees.  Approximately, 1,074 volunteers donated over 4,000 hours in planting trees spring of 1999.
