The History:

The Pennyrile RC&D Council was authorized by the Secretary of Agriculture in January 1976 to accelerate the conservation, development and utilization of natural resources in the nine county area.

Location:

The area is located in southwestern area of Kentucky where it encompasses about 2 ½ million acres in the nine counties of Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Livingston, Lyon, Muhlenberg, Todd and Trigg.



The Mission:

The Pennyrile RC&D Council mission is to work with various partners in carrying out an innovative plan to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the nine county area.

Vision:

The Council will carry out this mission through better management and utilization of available resources, particularly, soil, water and plants.

Our Goals:

  • Stabilize 2000 acres of eroding land in urban and rural areas. 
  • Reduce flooding.
  • Increase Recreation and Tourism Opportunities
  • Increase Public Awareness of Environmental Education.
  • Preservation of Historic Buildings.
  • Show How Trees Benefit the Environment.
Major projects to date:
  • 6.4 million dollar ecosystem project on 30.2 miles of Lower Cumberland River in Crittenden, Livingston and Lyon Counties.
  • Restoration work on Lower 75 miles of Tradewater River in Caldwell, Crittenden, Hopkins, Union and Webster Counties.
  • Preservation work on 51,000 square feet of Crispus Attucks High School building in Hopkinsville and 31,000 square feet of Rosenwald School in Madisonville.
  • Reclamation of Ketchup Lake area in Hopkins County in the conversion into 250 plus acres of usable land.
