"Green Dimension" Lumber has Possibilities for Local Sawmills
Sawmills in eastern Kentucky can take advantage of the latest technology for small operations. This is because some of the nation's foremost experts in hardwood lumber production are right here in Kentucky or nearby West Virginia. Their technical assistance is free and ranges from evaluation of existing operations to marketing assistance.  One of the experts is Dr. Jan Wiedenbeck of the University of Kentucky. She has studied and written extensively on sawmill production of hardwood dimension parts, a process sometimes called "green dimension" lumber production. The system illustrated in the accompanying process flow chart is well suited for small sawmills and can add profit to an existing sawmill operation. Green dimension production can yield up to 15 percent more clear parts from the same log compared to the conventional method of producing dimension parts. In addition the sawmill operator will get a premium for producing dimension parts ready for molding and turning operations.
Experience has shown that a green dimension producing sawmill can be a viable operation with as little as 40,000 board feet a month production. Interested prospects are invited to develop a strategic plan, a marketing plan and a business plan if they are interested in trying green dimension production. Assistance is available in developing these plans.  Martin County Industrial Development Director, Carlos Cassidy, theBig Sandy RC&D the UK Extension Service, and the KY Division of Forestry would like to get prospects out to hear about green dimension lumber production.  Please call Carlos Cassidy at 606-298-2800 if you would like to hear from some of the foremost experts in this field.  Based on interest Mr. Cassidy will schedule a green dimension lumber seminar where Dr. Wiedenbeck and other authorities will speak and answer questions.

Fallsburg Fire Department Update

The Fallsburg Fire Department (FD) has recently gone from an Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating of 10 to a lower rating of 9.  On August 20, 1997, Fallsburg FD Chief Chris Jobe met with ISO representative Jack Clark and together they inspected the Fallsburg FD equipment, records, and training that had been upgraded over the past few years. As a result the fire district has a new lower ISO rating that will result in savings for the policy owners of this community. Most policy owners will see the change effective January 1998. In other news the fire department has also secured an option for land to build a new fire station. This station is needed to upgrade ISO ratings below 9. An application is going to be made through the Rural Development agency of USDA. Cost sharing is being requested for a waterline extension, fire station building, and 38 hydrants throughout the district. The goal is to get a 7/9 ISO rating that will result in even more savings.

Inez Middle School Pedestrian Bridge And Stairs To Be Built By The Carl Perkins Job Corps

A recently installed nature trail/outdoor classroom will have the addition of a walk bridge and stairs thanks to the Martin County Conservation District and the building assistance of the Carl Perkins Job Corps carpentry class. Plans based on U.S. Forest Service designs will be used to install a 16 ft span over a ravine that separates two parts of a trail at the Inez Middle School. Myron Evans, Ag Agent, and Bob Blanton, District Conservationist, are assisting with planning and coordination of the outdoor classroom. RC&D assistance includes technical information and coordination of labor.
