In early 1989, the Gainesville Indian Community was thrust into the midst of a mini crisis. Within a short space of two weeks three students of Indian origin had tragically decided to end their precious lives. From the pangs of this despair and despondency, rose the concept of ICEC. A few key members of the local Indian community, Drs. Dinesh Shah and Rasik Nagda being prominent among them, formed the India Cultural and Education Center, or ICEC. Mission & Purpose • Assist students of Indian heritage in the fulfillment of their cultural and educational aspirations • Provide emergency financial assistance, scholarships and zero assistance loans to needy students • Provide academic guidance to students seeking careers in various fields • Create a support network of students to assist in times of emotional stress or crisis • Provide opportunity to its members to contribute towards the betterment of the community-at- large • Promote Indo-US cultural interactions by developing cultural and educational programs Administrative Structure • Governed by an elected 9-member Board of Trustees and a 15-member Council of Cultural Affairs • Board Office Bearers - President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer • Cultural Council — Elected Chair who appoints several sub-committee chairs • Categories of memberships: Trustee (donated $5,000 or more); Founding
Member ($1 ,000- $4,999); Regular (sustaining) Member ($75 annual dues);
Associate Member (students);
• The Indian Student Association (ISA) of the University of Florida nominates several ICEC student liaisons every year. The ISA faculty advisor and President are ex-officio members of the Council. Facilities Located at 1115 SW 13th Street, Gainesville, FL, the ICEC building is within walking distance of the UF campus. The two-story, 1 5,000 sq ft building sits on a 2.6 acre wooded lot and consists of a 7,000 sq. ft hall, a stage with curtains and projection screen, a kitchen, and six rooms for multiple use. Its use is free to UF students affiliated to ICEC and the ICEC Youth group.
