PH2 TESTED: 2012 YAMAHA YZF-R1
While the rest of the litre bikes (FireBlade, GSX-R1000, ZX-10R) had conventional inline four engines that fired every 180-degrees, Yamaha's new R1 had an uneven firing order. It fired at 0 - 270 - 180- 90 - 180-degrees, a development that Yamaha claimed helped eliminate 'inertial' torque. It's complicated, but in a nutshell every time a piston goes up and down it has to stop and start again, which creates uneven torque characteristics. On a bike the connection between the throttle and the power is essential for quick lap times as too much power, or bad throttle feel, equals slow lap times. The 'cross-plane' engine helps reduce the effect of the start-stop of the pistons and create a 'purer' torque delivery through its firing order. Does it work? Ben Spies won the 2009 World Superbike championship first time out on the R1 and Tommy Hill has just won the British Superbike title on the same bike - so in racing, yes. Oh, and the Yamaha MotoGP bike also uses a cross-plane motor and it has done ok...
The Poor Farm: How Do Ya Want Your Peterbilt?
"Just 2800 rpm." One of the hotrod tricks for the old mechanical four stroke motors like the Cummins 855 block or the Cats was to mess with (replace or just stretch the crap out of it) the throttle return spring and shim it up so that the cutoff of 2100 rpms could be exceeded. You really didn't want to make it a habit, or a ventilated block was a distinct possibility. Part of the idea was that the fuel "curve" would be fattened so that lower rpms could get more juice. Of course, other mods were necessary to get the fuel to flow. More diesel, more power. At any rate, 2,800 isn't really radical at all. Plus, this is a Detroit two stroker. It will not run without a blower. Yeah, it sounds cool to clearly have a couple of superchargers mounted, but they are pretty much standard Roots style blowers that have been on Detroits since day one....
Motor City Reviews » Blog Archiv » Car stalling when returning to ...
Today I was going along at 30mph with basically no electrical load. Windows were down air conditioning off, everything else apart from the engine off. I decided to turn everythng on all at once still going 30 mph. When I started to turn left into a junction and went into neutral for 2nd gear the car stalled I assume because of the huge electrical load placed on it from basically 0. The engine at a stop is very vibraty, can feel vibrations through the car. The engine revs up and down ok, but when it comes to idle, it would go to about 600rpm then come back up to about 850
The idle seems to be at a normal speed when it holds it there. It just shudders a bit just when comming back to idle for example going into neutral the revs drop to about 600 from 2000. this is when it stalls.
gotta love the "vibraty" description of the focus, lol. most are pretty rough after a few years, usually bad engine mounts. the idle issue is common thing as well, usually a vacuum leak in the pvc system, a leaky evap purge hose or any other vacuum hoses. dirty iacv or throttle plates are also common issues. most manufacturers warn against carb cleaner but instead recommend air intake or throttle body cleaner as carb cleaner can remove the special coatings on throttle plates and the inside surface of throttle bore. most vac laks can be found by sprayin small amounts of wd-40 around suspect areas. when the leaks sucks the wd into the engine, a short rpm rise will occur. this allows you to find the proximity of the leak and from there locating it should be simple. be careful not to spray the exhaust manifold or EGR tubes and plug wires as this can lead to a fire. one other suspect can be the mass air flow sensor. if part of it is dirty, it can cause pooor idle quality as well. usually same solution, clean it and dry with low pressure air before reinstalling.
