Engine revs when clutch is engaged...why? - JeepForum.com
The Jeep is an '04 wrangler sport with a newish Jasper 4.0. Changed the clutch when we put the new engine in it. However due to a pressure plate failure, I have had to put yet another clutch in it, all within a year. Now when I engage the clutch, the RPM's rev to around 3k, and drop back down when I tap the gas. I am completely lost at what is causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Every manual transmission, fuel-injected vehicle I've ever owned has displayed similar behavior at certain times - when I idle in 2nd gear into my grandparent's driveway and step on the clutch, the engine revs way up. It's done it some times when I'm backing up slowly with a trailer. Best I can figure, the computer sees the throttle position sensor registering as "closed" and uses the idle air control to maintain idle RPM. Under a load, the RPMs would be lower, so it has to open the IAC more than normal....
