I have a home air filter, and I have noticed a layer of black grime collecting on the walls near the air filter. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?? I have changed the actual filter part, no change.
do you smoke? do you have central air and heat? could it be mold from the inside of the wallboard? what is the humidity level?
whatever the problem, it's not CAUSED by the air filter. it's some kind of particulate matter in the air. smoke. dust, whatever.

I pulled mine off today to replace a light bulb noticing the the accummulation of ekk. I'm just not sure if any cleaning solutions or fluids should be used with the fine black air purifying type surface on the underside the vent.
You can put the whole thing in the dishwasher the hot water will dissolve the film but make sure you run it only with those items so the oil doesn't deposit on other items. in some cases you may have to run it twice if it's too dirty.

Forecast discussion: High pressure over the Southeast U.S. will be giving us great weather for the entire weekend. It will be a little warmer than last night, especially if you are heading out to any stores opening at midnight. Skies will remain clear during the pre-dawn hours of Black Friday. It will also be about 10 degrees warmer, as some warmer air from the south begins to filter over Southern New England. Saturday will be just as nice, and slightly warmer, with highs in the lower 60’s. By Sunday, we will see more clouds than sun, as a cold front slowly works its way towards the east coast. We will see showers and light rain Sunday evening, with heavier rain expected on Monday. The computer models are very murky on how to handle the weather after Monday. The American model no longer develops a low along the front, which hangs around the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday. This model clears us out by Tuesday afternoon. However, the European model now develops that second low, which will give us more rain into early Wednesday. Finally, the United Kingdom model develops a second low on Tuesday, but stays further south, and is much weaker than the European model. For now, I do not see any atmospheric dynamics which could help develop that second low. I’ll change the extended outlook, with precipitation ending on Tuesday afternoon. High pressure will give us nice weather by the middle of next week.
