However, service in those wars "might be associated with long-term health effects" because of the high levels of dust and pollution found in those areas, said the study conducted by the private, non-profit Institute of Medicine , a division of the National Academy of Sciences .
"I was completely unaware of the burn pits," said David Tollerud, an environmental health scientist at the University of Louisville and chairman of the study. "I was very unfamiliar, and in particular, was not aware of the degree of exposure to particulate matter that occurs widely."
Particulate matter, which can consist of dust, smoke and pollution, is small enough to be breathed deeply into the lungs, and Tollerud said "years of work" show an association with respiratory and heart disease.
Using air samples the military took at Joint Base Balad in Iraq — two in 2007 and one in 2009 — the researchers found particulate matter levels higher than the most congested cities in the world, including Beijing, Tollerud said. Tollerud also served on the first committee to look at the long-term health effects of Agent Orange after the Vietnam War .
