Detioration of the filter's function is really a function of use, not time. If you have not been using your heating system, then no, it should not need replacing. Consider changing it after every 30 days of use.

I am pretty confident that if you open the thing up, you've got to totally drain it and change the fluid. Am I correct? I know little to nothing about the inner-workings of transmissions--just the basics.
