Cars that smell like french fries

The concept seemed both wonky and appealing when I heard about it back in 2005.

Shuttle buses for delegates to an international climate-change conference in Montreal would run on biodiesel, a fuel derived from restaurants' used fat. Carbon dioxide emissions would be dramatically reduced. The city would smell like a giant chip wagon.

Too few buses were deployed to perfume the air. Even so, biodiesel became intriguing to me. And last Sunday, when I visited the annual Toronto EV Fest, I finally got to tour one version of it.

An exhibition meant to showcase electric vehicles might seem an odd place to encounter deep-fryer power, but the event is also a celebration of automotive creativity and do-it-yourself mechanical ingenuity.

So the chilly space at the Don Valley Brickworks hosted three biodiesel cars. The most advanced – although you wouldn't guess it judging only by appearance – was a rusting, green 1997 Volkswagen Golf owned by Dick Woudenberg, a high-school teacher and former BMW mechanic from Pickering.
