Great filter for the Yamaha R1
The KN-303 filter is what is used on my 2005 Yamaha R1. The filter has a 17mm lug on the top, which makes installation really easy. There is limited space between the filter and the headers, so being able to use an end wrench to install it is very nice. This saves having to have a special... -
GL1500-GL1800
The product from K&N is excellent. It has beaten most of the filters that compete against it in head to head studies. The KN303 is made for the GL1500, 1988 to 2000, but what many rides of newer GL1800's may not realize, it fits their bikes also. The K&N designed for the GL1800, KN204 is shorter...

Whatever you will do will probably void your warranty, which is bad. You should be able to pick up a set of slip ons for about 200 on ebay or craigslist.

Did a little overdue air filter cleaning @ 8500 miles.
I recently purchased a 2006 ninja 650r that would turn over but not fire. The battery is fully charged, there's fresh fuel in the tank, I have spark at the plugs, the fuel pump is working fine, and there's good compression. I did notice that the...

Caution On Air Filter Cleaning
I have removed and cleaned my air filter several times, but this last time, for some reason, I took the airbox apart after sliding the filter out of it. I was shocked to see stuff on the intake side of the filter, including big things like a bug or two. This is bad news and I tried to find the source of the leak, but could find nothing wrong with the filtering system. What I believe happened is that when I slid the filter out, stuff stuck to the outside of it got scraped off and fell to the bottom of the airbox; some of it getting over to the intake side. That's still not good, because the next time the engine is started that stuff can get sucked in. From now on I will make sure I take the airbox apart each time I clean the filter....
How often do you change the Air Filter on the 650R?
The service manual calls for cleaning the air filter every 7,500 miles. I did this for the first 40,000 miles but then I switched to cleaning every 10,000 miles because the filter was always still a long way from being clogged. It depends on where you live, and in Southwest Washington, we don't have much of a problem with dust or air pollution. It's supposed to have oil on it......that's what stops dirt from passing through. The old standard test is to hold the filter up to a light to see how much light passes through it. No harm in cleaning a filter more often than needed, but since it's a PITA to get to it, I prefer to delay it a little. I do all my maintenance at 5 and 10 thousand mile intervals, so 10K for filter cleaning works out.
